THE DEMPSTER HIGHWAY & NORTHWEST TERRITORIES This highway begins in the Yukon just east of Dawson on the road to Whitehorse. It winds 740 miles through the spectacular Olgilvie Mountains, through boreal forests, over tundra landscapes and over the Arctic Circle to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories. There are a few small settlements along the way, but generally, the route is extremely remote. A good day trip (72km) from Dawson is to Tombstone Campground. Here, you will find
trailheads and interpretive displays.
C
onstruction of the route between Dawson City and Inuvik in Canada's arctic region started in the 1950's after oil and gas were discovered near the Arctic Circle. The route also provides access to Fort McPherson on the Mackenzie River Delta. The Dempster is a real wilderness experience. It is unmarred by signs, civilization, or traffic. It is rough, rugged and has few facilities. Rainstorms, and high winds can sometimes make parts of the route impassable, or cancel ferry service into the
town of Inuvik (or out of it!!!) If you are planning on exploring this route, on foot or by car be prepared!
S
everal other campgrounds can be found along the way to Inuvik. If you do go all the way to Inuvik prepare for at least a 12 hour drive one way. The incredible landscape may tempt you to do some backcountry exploring that will rival that of Denali or anywhere else in the north country. Both the Olgilvie and Blackstone Rivers make for excellent backcountry float trips.
