Talkeetna is the place where more than 1,000 climbers a year begin their attempt to scale Mt. McKinley.  Hundreds of  climbers make their way to this community every day beginning in early April where they hire air taxi's to take them to base camp on the mountain.  

 Of course you don't have to climb McKinley to enjoy this town.  There are plenty of recreational and sightseeing opportunities here.  Chose from flight seeing around the Alaska Range, River excursions, hiking trails, or package tours.  This small town has a unique charm all its own, with renovated mining cabins, historic hotels, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.   The town also offers some of the best views of McKinley anywhere on land.  The museum located in the heart of the town, features a scale model of Mt. McKinley.  The Mountaineering Center/Ranger Station exhibits fantastic photographs of the Alaska Range.

The Talkeetna Historical Society Visitors Information Center is located in the town center. Stop by and see them or write PO Box 334 Talkeetna, AK. 99676. Also visit The Talkeetna-Denali Visitors Center located at mile 99 of the Parks Highway, at the junction of the Talkeetna Spur Road (14 miles from the town).

 The National Park Service has a ranger station. They can provide information on Denali National Park, and climbing in the Alaska Range (including McKinley). You may also obtain information on  mountaineering regulations & permits.
